We’re collaborating with Doug Richards and VCU to present this concert of A-list musicians
Join us for this one-time performance from the phenomenal Doug Richards Orchestra (DRO) of their newest work on September 20th at 7:30 pm. This concert is presented in collaboration with JAMinc.
This 17-piece jazz orchestra, comprised of the top musicians in the region, is directed by retired VCU Arts Music faculty, and founder of the VCU Jazz Studies Program, Doug Richards. The DRO will perform selections from Prof. Richards’ most recent album Through A Sonic Prism, featuring his innovative interpretations of bossa nova and samba masterpieces by Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as Richards’ arrangements of classics by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, and Richard Rogers.
The orchestra will also feature the stunning artistry of RVA vocalist Laura Ann Singh, a wide-ranging virtuoso singer, specializing in the music of Brazil.
Come hear why Richards was hailed by the famed music critic Martin Williams as “the most original writer for big band since Gil Evans.”
